Nothing of Anything

On an afternoon almost wholly without incident,
an elderly man is entering a lions’ enclosure with
a whip and a chair; he has been told there are no

hospital beds available. The veteran becomes worried
and suspects he is ill-equipped to prevent a mauling.
He is pleased with his makeshift defence, but for all the

gutsy endeavour the lions have the better of things.
In the evening, a nurse agrees that the man looks much
worse than before. He is moved to a cubicle with a door.

Iraq City Scene

An Interior Ministry official was dealing with his house,
A box of candy, a suicide bomber, insurgents
A sheikh (recently freed) and four others wounded.

The turbines stopped, plunging the City into darkness.
Amid restrictions and rocket fire, the only power:
cars driving along the darkened streets.

No one will be watching television late into the night
To see if there are any upsets. Political rallies are not allowed;
The most famous candidate has not been seen in public.

Expensive Mad Order

To impress the waitress at Cassandra's Restaurant
(where desperate protesters are eventually fed),
a crazy man is scoring a point about the difference between

agonizingly dwindling currency transparency
and foundering under the grander divergent turbulence
of a one-money slum government.

The smugly closed stores pull in aspirational civilians,
who looted them to steal some trash before it's chopped up.
He merely borrows the trash, in the trappings of a moral.

Our Astronomical Storytelling

The sun in humpback spirals from equinox to solstice
rises smooth as a tinted umbrella,
sets in lush tropic wrinkles with violet Sanskrit scribbles.

Lurking night can see the sun, and shadows him.
This meandering light behind the film above our frame
on the horizon, burns a path with growing degrees of return.

But for now there will be clear sky for the rainmaker,
palpably overcast for would-be viewers on a Pisgah point.
The murky winter thickens.

Alleged Religious Police

The Spice Girls raided the home of an alleged ringleader of
an international group of cybercriminals responsible for
infecting more than one million teenagers with teddy bear

hatred. Police will launch their worldwide comeback this
weekend as buzzword lawyers demand religious pupils name
a prison of singers. Initially, the raid helped Sudanese

'girl power', but police arrested 750,000 computers. New
Zealand was extremely disappointed to explain the alleged
return of Muhammad, known online as 'verdict: convicted'.
