He was a matrix of numerous materials,
a mixture of pride and fear,
the proximity of silver,

the risk of diminution,
a preternatural affinity for flashlights.
Contradictions and incongruities

made him a suitable symbol of the age.
He'd instinctively play dead.
He liked the comfort it provided.
